P-B-172
This commercial item description covers commercial and industrial quality coated abrasive cloth belts and bands for power sanding wood, metal and other materials.

Conditioning. Dimensions shall be measured after belts have been conditioned at least 24 hours at 75o + 5oF and 50 + 2 percent relative humidity.
Backing material. The coated abrasive shall be fabricated from cotton grey cloth or synthetic cloth, waterproof or non-waterproof as specified, conforming to the following requirements:

Abrasive. The cloth shall be coated on one side with abrasive quality silicon carbide, aluminum oxide or garnet as specified. The abrasive grain shall contain not more than 5 percent extraneous material.
Grit sizes. Coated abrasive cloth shall be in the following grit sizes as specified:
“X” weight cloth- 400, 320, 280, 240, 220, 180, 150, 120, 100, 80, 60, 50, 36, 24.
“J” weight cloth- 150, 120, 100, 80, 60.
Grading. The grading, control and tolerances of the abrasive grain shall be in accordance with ANSI B74.18.
Closed coat. The abrasive grain shall completely and uniformly cover the surface of the backing.
Adhesive. The making and sizing coats of adhesive shall be glue or a comparable adhesive, synthetic resin or waterproof as specified.
Bonds. The types of adhesive bonds shall be glue bond or equivalent, resin or glue equivalent, resinbond or waterproof.
Splices. The coated abrasive belt shall be joined to form a smoothly, continuous non-separating surface under normal working conditions.
Identification. The coated abrasive belt shall be identified by:
(a) Kind of abrasive grain (generic name, trade name or identification marking).
(b) Grit size.
(c) Backing weight, “X” for drills, “J” for jeans, with exception of waterproof drills.
(d) Open coat identification, if applicable.
(e) Belt size.
(f) Direction arrow
(g) Manufacturer’s name or trade mark.
